Joint research unit of CNRS and University of Limoges

XLIM leads a policy combining excellence and scientific and technological transfer in its scientific domains.
Far from being incompatible, these both strategies are mutually strengthened and allow to obtain internationally recognized results.

Presentation

Assets

XLIM grows its role on the research and development scene through two main orientations:
- strengthening its core skills in its scientific fields
- developing interdisciplinarity skills.

Core skills :

  • Information and Engineering Sciences and Technologies: Microwaves, Optics, Electromagnetism.
  • Mathematics, Computer Sciences, Imagery Synthesis.
  • Micro and nano-technologies and Instrumentation.

Interdisciplinarity skills :

  • Development of new scientific topics at the interface of its core skills: Communications and Data Security, Terahertz applications, Biophotonics, CAD, Imagery Synthesis…

Scientific Purpose

XLIM offers an original scientific panel within the French Research System associating researches in Mathematics with Communication Technologies supported by a Technological Platform devoted to microwaves and optical technologies and to instrumentation.
This technological platform (PLATINOM) is opened to academic and industrial collaborations based on its scientific expertise: MEMs technology, optical fibres and microwave instrumentation.
XLIM works in various fields such as: Telecommunications, Defense, Health, Space, Security ...

Organisation

5 scientific divisions :

  • Mathematics, computing sciences
  • High frequency devices, circuits and systems
  • Associated waves and systems
  • Micro and nanotechnologies for optoelectronic and microwave components
  • Photonics

Transverse research axes :

  • Information and Data Security
  • Terahertz applications
  • Bio-engineering
  • Radar and Optics Imagery
  • CAO

More than 350 people are involved in research, innovation and technology transfer.
XLIM gathers today about 175 researchers or engineers and also about 200 PhD students
or post-doc positions. The construction of a new building centered around specific laboratories for the PLATINOM platform (around 1 000 m2) will double the current area to approximately 9 000 m2. XLIM has many original and operational equipments at the top of the current technology such as ULB antennas measuring systems, set-ups for characterization of components and circuits manufacture benches of MEMs circuits and optical fibres drawing towers. These equipments supply the capability to answer to academic and industrial collaborations through technological developments associated to theoretical researches.

XLIM, an open laboratory

One of XLIM mission is to link research with a high level of teaching level.
XLIM is the scientific support of courses within professional / research masters in Mathematics and in Communication Engineering at the University of Limoges.
XLIM ensures a 3-year grant to each PhD student. Each year, half of these grants are opened to qualified graduate students issued
from other universities. One of the most important objective is to further develop the welcome of foreign researchers by offering PhD grants, post-doc positions or high level scientist positions. This effort toward international collaborations has already allowed to welcom many foreign visitors for short or long stays.

XLIM, a socio-economic partner

After having been its initiator, XLIM is the scientific core of the French "pôle de compétitivité" cluster ELOPSYS.
Around the scientific axes supported by XLIM, this cluster gathers about 7 500 people in the "region Limousin" and involves big companies like LEGRAND or PHOTONIS as well as small and medium size companies. Over the past two years, as a result of an efficient collaboration between ELOPSYS and the laboratory 'incubator' of University of Limoges, several start-up companies have been created in the fields of photonics (LEUKOS, APTICOD, HORUS) or electronics (AMCAD,PEARL).
These start-up companies are issued from research activities and patent deposit by XLIM. Within the framework of its industrial partnerships, XLIM has created 3 joint laboratories with THALES for radar applications, with ALCATEL ALENIA SPACE for satellite systems and with RADIALL in the field of antennas.
